MTM Scientific, Inc... Pickup Loop for AM Loop Antenna

The AM Loop Antenna sold by MTM Scientific, Inc is designed to be used with a portable AM radio. The coupling from the antenna to the radio is through the ferrite loop antenna inside most portable AM radios. We have received several inquries about the possibility of conneting the antenna to a regular component receiver.  Although every situation is different, it is generally easy to do.

Pickup Loop for AM Loop Antenna  Antenna Connection to Receiver

The AM Loop Antenna can be connected to most receivers by forming a single turn loop, about 6 inches diameter, using a piece of solid copper wire. The 2 ends of the loop should be soldered to the bare ends of a flexible coaxial cable. The other ends of the cable should be stripped back and connected to the receiver, as shown.  In the photos we show the loop being held at the center of the wooden cross arms using push pins.  A more permanent installation can be made by drilling holes and routing the loop before soldering.

This arrangement will allow the receiver to tune the signal from the Loop Antenna.  For tuning, first dial-in on the radio to the frequency of the station you wish to receive.  Then, aim the Loop Antenna in the direction of the radio station.  Then tune the dial on the antenna until you hear a signal enhancement.  Finally, fine tune the receiver to peak the signal. Although this might sound complicated, it actually is easy to do.

There is nothing special about the wire size or pickup loop size.  Approximate dimensions are OK.  About the only really important thing is to keep the pickup loop approximately centered and in the same plane as the main loop.
